Hair is an integral component of Black womens’ identities. It is part of who they are, signifying heritage, culture and strength, but also highlighting continued prejudice. Black women agree that hair has always had a deeper meaning that is so much bigger than just hair.
SSI uncovers the meaning of hair for the AA female consumer, while exploring:
- The effects of society and the workplace
- Issues faced by black women
- Attitudes toward men and beauty
- Intersectionality
- Moms and generational wisdom
For a majority of Black women, hair is empowering . They feel empowered when wearing styles that make them look and feel good, or that embrace their heritage. However, their hair can also be a source of frustration and insecurity, and pressure to conform. While a majority of surveyed African American women do not believe that their hair choices are influenced by societal expectation, there is still a considerable proportion who are concerned with acceptability and respectability.
