The Socio-historical Importance of Hair
There is a long history in the US of Black women's hair being policed and expected to conform to white standards. Although a lot has changed over the years, there are still deep rooted beliefs and prejudices towards Black hair. For women of color, their chosen hairstyle means so much more than just their “look”.
Acceptability and Professionalism
Three quarters of surveyed women believe that there are some hairstyles that society generally considers unprofessional. Although women of color are aware of societal opinions and prejudices towards certain styles, most do not let these opinions dictate their choices.
